Day 2 Without Daddy

It was “back to school” day yesterday. The kids did great! They got all their school work done early and we were able to go to the park.Β It was sunny and a little on the cool side. They had a blast running around and exploring. There was a little boy there that decided he wanted to play with Isaac. He followed him around for almost the entire time we were there.

We were invited to a friends’ house for dinner and then we came home and Skyped with Nathan. It’s sweet to have Daddy pray with them from Atlanta. Nathan said he brain was full from all the sessions, but that they were very good.

And then I stayed up too late last night πŸ™‚

How We’re Doing- Day 1 Down!

I was a bit apprehensive about how yesterday would go, but it ended up going smoothly. It was so much better than I anticipated. I asked people to pray and, God must have decided it would be best help us have a calm day πŸ™‚

Audrey made this creation as a model of our home:

If you look very closely, you can see Nathan driving away into the distance. I thought it was the funniest/sweetest/saddest thing.

We watched the movie Annie (the new one). It was pretty good. Not awesome though. The kids enjoyed it. We wrapped up yesterday with Skyping with Nathan before the kids went to bed. Today is back to reality. We’re doing school. They weren’t thrilled, but I’m happy for routine. I’m also working on getting/keeping the house in order. It smells a bit like dog and stinky shoes πŸ™‚

Goodbye Grandparents and Daddy!

We had a great weekend with the Fritz Grandparents. We played games, chatted, fixed things around the house, did some yard work, had our tradition BBQ meal, and made our own ice cream sundae bar! It rained off and on all weekend. In between the rain, the sun would peek out.

Last night, Audrey started getting sad about the thought of them leaving. She is the one who is most impacted when the grandparents leave. It takes some creative distraction. I was able to help her try some of her tricks of things to do when she is feeling sad and then I found a book that she hadn’t read and she was able to distract herself with reading that last night.

Today, we have a “no school” day. I had already planned for it to be a day off. It’s an easier way to deal with having company leave. So, the day will be filled with some extra screen time, finishing up the cupcakes they left (none for me because I’m not having sugar), using the leftover toppings on our ice cream (again, not for me…. sigh), a trip to WalMart for a few things and a restful day overall. I’m not actually going to let them use screens and eat sweets all day– just for part of the day πŸ™‚

Shortly after Nana and Grandpa left, Nathan left for work. We won’t see him until Thursday night. He is going to a conference in Atlanta. They are leaving from work at 2:00. He is going to have a fabulous time, but we are going to miss him! I don’t remember the last time I had to go this long with having no one else to help with the kids. It’s not that I need “help” so much, but I wont be able to go anywhere by myself. That’s a strange thing.

It will be an interesting week!

Countdown

Only 1 hour until I have been on my strep medication for 24 hours and I will no longer be contagious!

Only 1 more day until Nathan’s parents visit us. I have a lot of cleaning to do!

Only 5 weeks until this school year is over!

Sick!

I was feeling crummy yesterday. For most of the day, I wrote it off to the humidity and allergies and the fact that I really wanted chocolate. But when I arrived home from bringing Ethan to and from Bible Bowl practice last night, I knew that it was worse than allergies. My throat was killing me, I felt tired, and chilled. I took my temperature and it read about average which for me is a fever. I always run a degree or two below normal.

I had to call a friend and tell her that I wouldn’t be able to sub for her in her 1st and 2nd grade history/geography classes. I felt terrible that I was letting her down, but it was better to make the call at 8:30 at night than in the morning with no time to find a replacement.

I slept lousy. Strange dreams. It hurt so bad to swallow. I dropped Ethan at tutorial this morning at 8:00 and went directly to the clinic at CVS. My strep test came back positive. I’ve started my meds and I took some ibuprofen for my sore throat. A friend did lunch duty for me with Ethan and the other two kids at tutorial and then volunteered to just keep them all and bring everyone home after the 3:00 class ended. I am blessed with great friends!

I’m sad because Ethan has an end of the year celebration at for tutorial tonight and I’m contagious until tomorrow morning πŸ™ Hopefully, Nathan can take some good photos and videos for me. I’m hoping to put this behind me quickly so we can enjoy Nathan’s parents coming to visit.

Healthy Eating

I’ve had lots of starts and stops in trying to have a healthier diet. Such is life πŸ™‚

But, I am here to announce that I have been sticking to eating so much better and I’m on day 16! I think that’s a miracle. Here are the things you should be celebrating with me:

  • Cut out caffeine (okay, the jury is still out on if it’s good for you or not. For the time, I’m eliminating it.). I’ve had a few slips ups but I’ve gone from coffee every day and soda most days to no more than 12 oz of soda in 16 days.
  • Cut out sugar. I had a half a cupcake at a friends’ house and some chocolate covered fruit on Easter. That’s it.
  • Added tons of vegetables. Think 40 cups of veggies in a week. I don’t even recognize myself. Ha!
  • Eating more fruit. Not as much fruit as veggies, but still, a decent amount.
  • Avoiding soy as much as possible.

I plan to be strict with this for 28 days. Then I will evaluate how I’m feeling and how sustainable this is. I think the biggest win in this whole thing is that Nathan joined me in this (about a week after I started). We really needed to make a change because our bodies were not getting the nutrition they needed. So, while it is about our weight, the bigger picture is our long-term (and short-term) health.

In related news, did you have any idea how many dishes I’m washing with all the cooking and chopping I’m doing? I need a kitchen fairy!

3rd Place!

Ethan’s Bible Bowl team took 3rd place in the April Round Robin!

He got to bring home the trophy and keep it for a bit. It goes back to be awarded to the appropriate team next month πŸ™‚

Strange Medical Things Always Happen On The Weekend

On Saturday night, while we were eating supper, Nathan noticed that Ethan’s thumb looked strange. It looked like it had a huge blister on it.

Apparently, Ethan had poked it with the pin on the back of a button and it got infected. He didn’t mention it to us. That happened on Wednesday. Oops.

So, Nathan called his dad for advice and we soaked it in hot water periodically to try to draw out the infection. Yesterday afternoon, Nathan sterilized a pin so he could prick it and get the infected ickyness out. There was lots of screaming and weeping and fighting to try to get away. It was quite a sight.

Here is what it looked like Saturday night:

[pe2-image src=”http://lh5.ggpht.com/-AtmwEeqZ8Is/VSmlewhknyI/AAAAAAABgEY/DP81j233HvQ/s144-o/IMG_1554.JPG” href=”https://picasaweb.google.com/118259776065704938395/20150411#6136617915109383970″ caption=”” type=”image” alt=”IMG_1554.JPG” ]

By Sunday night, we decided it was not getting better fast enough and we didn’t want to risk the infection getting worse. So, after our small group meeting, Nathan took Ethan to the urgent care clinic and they were able to clean out the rest of the disgusting fluid in that infected area and bandage him up and give him a prescription for an antibiotic. Β Hopefully, Ethan is on the mend now.

Spring Cleaning

It’s the time of year when are hearts are turned toward cleaning πŸ™‚ Or maybe not, but my house has been neglected for a few weeks and I need to get back to a good schedule. I have enjoyed this one on the past and I’m working through it again:

cleaning

Since I’m starting today, I’m a few days behind. I’m hoping to spend extra time catching up today. We are home for most the of the day, so it should be possible.

Other stuff I need to do:

  • Go through the kids’ clothes and store/get rid of seasonal things they have outgrown.
  • Make a trip to Goodwill to drop off clothes
  • Keep up with the laundry πŸ™‚ — never ending

Bringing Halloween baskets to an Easter egg hunt. Sometimes you can’t find the right baskets when it’s time to go. Oops.
